How to improve Number Sense in Math

Number sense is the ability to understand and work with numbers flexibly and confidently. It helps students see patterns, make connections and solve problems more effectively.

Here are 5 activities that you can do with your child to help improve number sense for secondary school students:

1. Decompose Numbers

  • Activity: Take a number like 96 and ask, "How can you break this into easier parts to add or subtract?"

    Example: 96 = 100 - 4 or 90 + 6.

2. Number Comparisons

  • Question: "Which is larger, 3/4 or 7/10? How do you know without using a calculator?"

Encourage estimation and reasoning rather than direct calculation.

3. Target Number Challenges

  • Activity: Give a target number like 45 and ask, "How many ways can you make this number using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division?"

4. Real-Life Math Applications

  • Question: "If a store is giving a 15% discount on a $50 item, how would you estimate the final price?"

Teach rounding and estimation to simplify the process.

5. Group and Compare Items

  • Activity: Using everyday objects like coins or buttons, group them into sets and ask, "What’s the easiest way to count these quickly?"

Explore grouping strategies like by 5s, 10s, or fractions.

These activities will help students to see math as approachable, practical, building confidence and flexibility with numbers.
