Laws of Indices

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Dear students,

Indices is an important chapter in Secondary Math. Indices will be taught to Secondary 3 students in school. It is an important bridge to chapters such as logarithm in O Level A Math and N Level A Math. Furthermore, it is tested yearly in O Level E Math, A Math and N Level Math and A Math examinations in Singapore.

However, the Laws of Indices are NOT in the O Level E Math, A Math and N Level Math and A Math formula sheet. So how are you going to remember these 9 laws by heart and apply them in exams?

Math Lobby will teach you some simple tricks to remember these laws easily! Let’s work hard together and strive for A1!

Law 1 of indices: (Remember that X the same bases means you can + their powers)

Law 2 of indices: (Remember that the same bases means you can - their powers)

Law 3 of indices: (Remember that ( ) means you can X their powers)

Law 4 of indices: (Remember that if they have the same power means you can X their bases)

Law 5 of indices: (Remember that if they have the same power means you can divide their bases)

Law 6 of indices: (Remember that anything to the power of 0 gives us 1)

Law 7 of indices: (Remember that you can remove the negative sign by putting in the denominator)

Law 8 of indices: (Remember as IN/OUT. 1 will be IN the square root and n will be OUTSIDE the square root)

Law 9 of indices: (Remember IN/OUT. m will be IN the square root and n will be OUTSIDE the square root)
