Many people have the mindset that Normal academic students should not take Additional Math (A-Math) and it is only for express stream students. But this is a misconception. There are many benefits of taking A math and with the right kind of support, NA students can succeed in A-Math as well!
Here are 3 benefits of taking A math as an NA student:
1) Benefits of A Math for NA students
Future Opportunities
A-Math isn’t just another subject—it’s a stepping stone to higher education opportunities and a way to stand out when applying for competitive courses. A Math as a foundation subject opens up doors (and windows) to advanced math in polytechnic, JC or even certain career paths.
If you go into JC, A math will allow you to take H1 Math. (H1 Math Syllabus)
For Poly, you can use A math as a foundation for common engineering courses or IT related courses (Temasek Poly, Singapore Poly)
For University Admissions, you can enter into courses such as Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematical Degrees (NUS)
Skill Development:
A-Math fosters problem-solving, logical reasoning, critical and analytical thinking. Unlike E-Math, A-Math problems are more complex and require flexible approaches as the steps to solve them are not always clearly defined.
eg. Chapter 1 - Quadratic Equations and Inequalities
Qn: Determine the range of values of m for which the equation 3x2 – 2mx + m + 6 = 0
has no real roots.
Ans outline:
Understand what are real roots
Conditions for real roots
How to find and select range
2) Challenges of A-Math for NA Students—and How to Overcome Them
Challenge 1: Struggling with A Math Concepts
Many NA students may find it hard to understand Additional Math concepts as they are very different from E Math.
How Math Lobby can help: We have small, focused group classes (2-5 people) or personalized 1-1 tuition which can address foundational gaps in the understanding of A math concepts.
Challenge 2: Lack of Confidence: Many NA students may feel they aren’t “good enough” for A-Math.
How Math Lobby can help: It is important to have a growth mindset for A math as A math is not the determination of "how smart I am" but "how hard I work."
We build student's confidence by instilling EPP - Effort, Practice, and Perseverance—not innate talent.
3) How Math Lobby Supports NA Students Taking A-Math
Tailored Learning Plans: Math Lobby's classes are customized for NA students’ unique needs, starting from the basics.
Small Class Sizes: We are very particular about our small group classes (2-5 people) so that each student can have focused attention.
Proven Track Record: One of our NA students, Sheeyn, came in after our Nov/Dec crash course in Secondary 3, has achieved B3 in her Secondary 4 prelims in A-Math because of personalized guidance and consistent practice.
4) Parents’ concerns on Additional Math
“Will it be too stressful?”
Our proven structured support prevents students from overwhelm. With the right pacing and consistent effort, Math will not be too stressful.
“What if my child doesn’t do well?”
At Math Lobby, we prioritize building confidence and a love for problem-solving, ensuring that students feel supported every step of the way. While immediate results may not always be visible, our structured approach ensures students build resilience and valuable skills that lead to long-term success in A-Math.
