Where is the best place to study?

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

Hello, students of Math Lobby! On our website, we are always working hard to provide you with the best study tips and advices to increase your productivity and efficiency so that you are clear of the ways to approach your studies to strive and excel.

However, apart from the actual process of studying, there is also another key factor that you have to consider before you start studying – the environment.

Students tend to pick places that are typical and convenient to study at, but they lack the effort in finding an actual conducive study venue that can aid them in the process.

Therefore today, Math Lobby is going to discuss about the different perks of the top three most common studying venues can offer, so that you can choose the best place to study yourself!

One of the most important things to consider when you pick a studying venue is its comfortability. A studying session typically lasts for hours, so it will be wise for you to pick a place that you are able to stay for a long period of time.

Choosing a place in which you are comfortable with will have to satisfy these criteria:

1) Being familiar with the place

2) Able to keep your cool and be composed

3) Able to consistently keep it in your routine

For example, if you get hot and perspire easily, it is advisable for you to seek a study area that is air-conditioned. If you are prone to distractions, find a place that is quiet in nature.

However, you should also take note that you should not be TOO comfortable in the studying venue, as it places your mind into a state of relaxation which you will find it difficult to concentrate and focus on your work.

1) Library

The most common place when students think about studying is at a library. It is air-conditioned and has a quiet nature, which allows you to stay there for a long period of time without getting distracted.

There are study tables with seats available if you are going to be doing an individual self-revision, and study rooms for you to host a study group, which you can easily get your hands on by just booking a slot online with the respective library.

Furthermore, it is a library! Hence, there is a whole variety of information and learning e-resources to aid you in your studies. One important thing to note is to take note of the days which you go to the library, since it can get quite packed during peak examination periods. Therefore, be sure to plan your schedule properly before heading down!

In Singapore, there are 26 Public Libraries managed by the National Library Board available around the country, which you can check out the one nearest to you and visit it whenever you like!

2) Cafés

Another popular choice of the students in Singapore is cafés. Cafés are well-known for their air-conditioned, light and relaxing atmosphere, which is often credited to its slightly-dimmed orange lighting, giving off a very warm and welcoming vibe to calm you down especially when you are stressed out for your examinations.

Sitting down with your laptop and slowly browsing through your notes, while sipping a cup of warm cappuccino can really help your mind focus on your objectives without getting much distractions.

One of the perks that cafés offer is the free wi-fi service, which you can easily access by just asking the staff members for the password since it is generally open for the public. It is advisable to note that you should avoid peak hours like during lunch and dinner timings as there will typically be a huge crowd, making it much noisier than usual!

3) Your home-sweet-home

When we are on the topic of comfortability, nothing more can be said other than being in the comfort of your own home. However, I do have to warn you that studying at home, especially in the bedroom, can be a double-edged sword.

Indeed, it is the most convenient place for you to be in as you do not have to travel out. You do not have to worry about forgetting any studying materials as it is within your grasp at any moment in time. There is also no need to worry about leaving your seat for a break and only to come back seeing someone else taking your spot. It is the best option, right?

Yes, but that is only if you are able to avoid of ALL the distractions you have at home, and I am talking about the video games, the internet, the television and even your bed!

Studying at home has all its perks, but the number of distractions present is nothing less than daunting as well since everything is within your reach. You can lie down on your bed which might make you feel lazy and tired, the video game console that you keep seeing in your peripheral vision will constantly try to attract you towards it, and the refrigerator in your kitchen will make you take endless “breaks”!

Therefore, it is important to find a good area in your house to settle down before you start studying as it can be the most conducive, yet the most distracting studying venue you will ever be in.
